A.1 During hip replacement surgery, a part of damaged portion of the hip is removed and is replaced with an artificial joint.

A.2 Hip replacement can be of 2 types :-
- Hemiarthroplasty – In this only the femoral ball is replaced retaining the acetabulum cup. It is generally done for neck of femur fracture in elderly population with limited life expectancy.
- Total Hip arthroplasty – In this both the femoral head and acetabulum cup are replaced. Common indications are osteoarthritis of hip, avascular necrosis of hip, neck of femur fracture in patient with expected life expectancy more than 10 years, secondary osteoarthritis due to fracture of femoral head or acetabulum cup.

A.3 Total hip replacement surgery can be of 4 types :-
- Uncemented
- Hybrid
- Reverse hybrid
